That’s All Folks

Th-th-th-that’s all folks

Rev. Dr. Porky Pig

Well, as my time as pastor of First-Calvary Baptist Church comes to an end, perhaps Porky Pig’s concluding words at the end of each Hanna-Barbera cartoon segment involving such characters as Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Elmer Fudd et. al., seem appropriate. Or not.

Sure, some things, actually all things, change and end (as the tragic near-loss of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris tell us). But we just finished Easter which provides an alternative to Porky Pig’s final pronouncement — that maybe when the perceived ending arrives there’s more. A hymn we sing on Easter Morning, Hymn of Promise, puts it this way:

In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity;
In our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity;
In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory;
Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

So yes, my time as your pastor ends. But … it’s just a new beginning for all of us and where that takes us, well, as the hymn states it’s only something God alone can see. So, to quote another song, this one sung by the children in the Sound of Music:

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu…

Good bye … I love you.

In faith and hope for the future,

Rev. Dr. Richard Haley
